Welcome to the Lee Ritenour Six String Theory Guitar Competition  going on it’s 4th year!! We look forward to hearing some diverse and amazing guitar talent from around the world!

Competition Registration Opens January 15, 2014 and Closes May 15, 2014. Winners Announced June 1, 2014!

We want to see 2 YouTube videos (no more than 5 min/each; no camera stops) of you playing with your band, a solo arrangement, duet performance, or any other performance that showcases your skills as a guitarist. You can enter in one of 6 categories: Rock, Blues, Jazz/Fusion, Country, Acoustic and Classical/Flamenco. A guitarist may register in more than one genre of the guitar competition but must register with a different email address and pay the $25 registration fee for each. A guitarist may also register in the Rhythm Competition if he or she plays bass, piano/keyboards or drums as well. Applicants should be “non-professional” or “semi-professional” defined as not making your full-time, sole income from being a musician (see Rules for further details). We are looking for more than speed and great guitar chops, so send us something unique and inspiring that displays your musicianship and your virtuosity!

How to Sign Up:

  • Prepare 2 videos (5 min maximum per video, no camera stops) and upload them to www.youtube.com.  Before you register,  you should already have uploaded your 2 videos to YouTube and have the links ready to provide during the registration process.
  • Cover songs are permitted but we emphasize trying to put an original spin or arrangement on the song. Copying an established guitarist with the cover song arrangement is not recommended. Backing tracks are fine but good to have at least one of 2 videos submitted be with original backing tracks or by musicians associated with applicant.
  • It is recommended, however not required, that one of the two videos submitted be performing live with other musicians (it doesn’t have to be a public event). This gives the judges an idea on how you play with other musicians.
  • Guitarists may use loop pedals or effects, but we recommend the looping does not over shadow your main guitar performance. It is not a ‘loop’ contest. We will judge your performance on your overall guitar playing, performance, skills, originality (which may include your looping & effects), etc.
  • Go to the “SIGN UP” section to fill out our online application and submit your $25 application fee.  On the form, along with your contact information, you will  also provide musical genre,  short BIO of your music history, if you’re interested in Berklee College of Music scholarship, your 2 YouTube video links, etc.
  • Our panel of professional guitarist judges will evaluate all the videos and determine six (6) finalists, who will be chosen spread out among the genres.  The winners will be announced on or before June 1st, 2014 and ranked 1-6, with 1 being the grand prize winner.

If you have any questions, please email: 6stringtheory@gmail.com
